3 1/2" Gauge "Mountaineer"

LittleLocomotives

'Mountaineer' was built by the American Locomotive Co (Alco) in 1917 and is now preserved on the Ffestiniog Railway.

I am very pleased to be able to offer this 3 1/2" gauge Mountaineer for sale. We are selling the loco on behalf of its owner. The loco is situated in north Norfolk.

Built to Don Youngs excellent design this model of an Alco 2-6-2 is a tried and trusted performer.

The castings for this Mountaineer are believed to have been bought in France in the early 1960s. Two friends then proceeded to build the loco together starting in the early 1990s. The boiler was ordered in 1992 and delivered in February 1993 from John Ellis of Kinver. The makers original hydraulic certificate comes with the loco and the boiler passed its initial hydraulic certificate on 22/02/93 being tested to 160 psi for a running pressure of 80 psi.

The loco was completed in 1994 and was steam tested for the first time in 1995. The loco was used privately and at the local club up until 1999. It is not thought that the loco was used after this time.

The loco includes a superheater, mechanical lubricator and cab operated drain cocks, bell and whistle. There also appear to be a water by-pass valve indicating the loco is fitted with an axle pump. A hinged water tank top conceals a hand pump.
